While it may still be warm outside today things are going to cool off around here this Winter! Take advantage of today’s glorious weather and take some steps to protect your house from Colder weather. Have your Heating, Cooling and Ventilation system checked out by a professional company. If you need a good recommendation I will gladly send you a list of preferred vendors. Check out the insulation around your doors and windows and maybe consider caulking around the exterior window trim to ensure you are not unnecessarily losing air to the outside. Do a visual inspection of the outside of your house. See if you have any roof shingles that have blown off or look damaged. Better yet, call a roofer to walk your roof and give you an inspection of the condition of your roof shingles. Trim any trees that may have grown on top of your roof. This condition not only causes damage to your roof but it also is conducive to inviting pests like ants or rodents into your home. Don’t forget to reverse the direction of your ceiling fans once it actually cools off. This energy saving tip will help your utility bill in the Winter. Raking leaves is perhaps a Fall ritual you can’t live without but you may want to consider mowing leaves without a bag and leave a layer of mulched leaves to help maintain the moisture in your yard. Go ahead and clean out those gutters and blow the leaves off your roof. Leaves and pine needles can play havoc with your gutters and may lead to water penetration in your house. Finally take some steps to ensure your lawn equipment is ready for it’s season of rest. Add a fuel stabilizer to your gas powered tools as well as your supply of gas in containers. Remember the Ben Franklin adage “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”. Just read the instructions of the gas additive for more accurate portions!
